This fine Neale & Co Toby jug features in the 1929 book “Staffordshire Pottery Figures” by Herbert Read: Plate 43 “Bernard Middleditch Collection” “Mark Neale & Co. Made by J. Neale and H. Palmer of Hanley about 1770-80” This book will be included in the sale of this Toby jug. In addition to the underbase stamp NEALE & Co there is the inscribed number “96” and a label: “Formerly in the collection of Miss Middleditch. Direct descendant of James Neale” It’s rare to come across a Toby jug with such good provenance particularly when it has been retained in the Pottery owner’s family for many years.
