In addition, the rear of the hands appeared to be unglazed pottery with signs of green and manganese glaze (from the waistcoat and small jug) and the only logical conclusion was that the hands had been left undecorated by the pottery in error some 240 years ago and had later been painted. I stripped off two layers of paint to reveal the original hands in perfect condition! As you can see they look fine and I’m delighted to say that the buyer has decided to leave them like this as this is simply a quirky part of the Toby’s history.
