Fine and rare Prince Hal Toby jug Staffordshire c.1800 15 1/4" tall

This is an imposing and rare Toby jug with less than 20 recorded. The Prince Hal Toby is said to represent either Sir Toby Belch from twelfth night or King George IV (when Prince of Wales) when he attended a Brighton ball dressed as Henry V111. This example is very well decorated and in surprisingly good condition - a quite remarkable figure!

A very fine pearlware Toby jug Staffordshire c.1790

This is a particularly well made and decorated pearlware Toby jug - lightly potted and coloured in translucent ochre, cobalt, green and grey glazes and in very nice original condition. I like the fact that over some 200 years or so no-one has attempted to paint over the glaze loss on the small jug - it adds character and keeps this as a very honest and original Toby jug!

Nestegg Antiques frequently have many other early English toby jugs available - Ralph Wood, Enoch Wood, Squire, Sailor, Lord Howe, Postillion, Davenport, Neale, Martha Gunn, Drunken Sal, step tobies, Sinner toby's and other rare antique toby jugs.

The number of collectors of early English toby jugs both in the UK and across the world continues to increase and this ensures that the value of collections rises accordingly - this is potentially a great investment area and certainly a lot more fun than having savings in the bank and likely to show a better return! New collectors (once their hooked!) have a tendency to buy a large number of lower priced mid Victorian or later toby jugs - my advice would be to buy fewer and concentrate on the good pre 1820 toby jugs - these early toby jugs are likely to be the good investments.

Nestegg Antiques is the leading provider of antique and early English Toby jugs and over the past ten years we have been able to work with both museums and private collectors around the world assisting them in expanding their collections. We normally have over 150 early toby jugs in stock at prices ranging from under £100 to over £7000 and therefore, in addition to the ones listed on our website, we have many others - please contact us if you are looking for a particular toby jug.

It is generally acknowledged that the earliest English toby jugs were produced in Staffordshire c.1780 although there is good reason to suggest that the Midshipmite and step toby jugs might be slightly earlier. We are all familiar with the "Ordinary" toby jug although these come in many variations such as Long Face, Roman nose, Sharp face, Yorkshire, Collier, Askew, Step etc and can be in pearlware, creamware and saltglaze stoneware as well as delft or tinglazed for the continental versions. In addition to the ordinary toby jug we have numerous other moulds such as The Squire, Hearty Good Fellow, Lord Howe, Coachman, Drunken Parson, Sinner, Sailor, Thin man, Martha Gunn, Drunken Sal, Welshman and many more - the list if not never ending is substantial! I have collectors who focus solely on variations of the ordinary toby jug and collectors who wish to have a representative selection of moulds - this is entirely down to personal preference.

Nestegg Antiques is always eager to buy good early toby jugs and as the leading supplier we are prepared to pay the very best prices - often this can be preferable to selling at auction as you avoid the not insignificant fees involved. If you have a single early toby jug or a collection that you are considering selling please contact us and we will be pleased to advice you regarding value - you may well be pleasantly surprised!
